The Tiles for a Cleaner Coast Project

Preserving our environment, one beach at a time

We are excited to lead the Tiles for a Cleaner Coast project, with ceramist Joanna de Deià at the helm.

Our mission is to adorn Mallorca’s beaches with hand-painted tiles, encouraging locals and tourists to participate in litter collection and preserve the pristine beauty of this Mediterranean paradise. Join our mission and let’s leave a legacy of clean beaches and a trash-free sea. Together, we can protect Mallorca’s coastline and conserve the Mediterranean Sea for future generations.

What are the tiles?

Our Tiles for a Cleaner Coast are designed to bring awareness and inspire people to take their trash off the beach and place it in the bin. We can’t just keep cleaning the beaches up. We have to prevent the trash from getting into the sea. Towards this objective, I intend to position hand-painted ceramic tiles and murals all around the Mallorcan coast. They easily attract the attention of an international population of all ages and, being ceramic, can withstand all weather conditions. I know firsthand that my murals work because for several years my tiles have been up at Cala Deia and the beach is much cleaner now.

How to Get Involved

Do your part by helping keep our beaches clean, picking up your waste and any extra possible. Additionally encouraging others to do the same if you notice them being haphazard with their trash.

You can sponsor a tile being made and posted at a beach. For more information on sponsorship, click here.

You can encourage places or organizations you have connection with to sponsor a tile and get involved with Mediterranean Sea conservation efforts through Tiles for a Cleaner Coast.

Who am I?

I am Joanna de Deia (originally from Chicago) and I literally washed up onto the shores of this beautiful island of Mallorca by sailboat 43 years ago. I have been active in marine conservation for many years, also supporting the activity of Save the Med and Cleanwave foundations. I participated in the communication process around the Balearic Islands becoming the first Mission Blue Hope Spot in the Mediterranean. I have just applied to be a member of the Balearic Blue Deal initiative. I started my own project Tiles for a Cleaner Coast, designed to bring awareness and inspire people to take their trash off the beach and place it in the bin.

We can’t just keep cleaning the beaches up. We have to prevent the trash from getting into the sea in the first place.
